Heute vor fünf Jahren starb der US-Schauspieler Marlon Brando. Eine seiner berühmtesten Rollen war sicherlich die des Don Corleone im US-Spielfilm Der Pate (engl.: The Godfather) von Francis Ford Coppola. Das wohl bekannteste Zitat aus diesem Film lautet:

I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.

Das kleine Wörtchen “just” hat im Englischen mehrere Bedeutungen. Häufig wird es lediglich mit “nur” übersetzt. (Bsp. just for you – nur für dich)

Eine weitere Bedeutung kommt jedoch im folgenden Zitat vor:

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Gerade als ich dachte, ich sei raus, ziehen sie mich wieder rein.

Hier kann man “just” mit “gerade” übersetzen. Bei dem jungen Herren im Video handelt es sich übrigens um Steve van Zandt, u.a. Gitarrist von Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street-Band. Hier allerdings in der Rolle des Silvio Dante aus der TV-Serie Sopranos, mit der er mit diesem Zitat Al Pacino in “Der Pate” imitiert.

Ein weiteres Zitat, bei dem “just” wie oben verwendet wird, stammt aus dem Song “You know what I mean” von Phil Collins.

Just as I thought I’d made it

Heute habe ich einmal einen sehr schönen Webtipp. Die Onlineausgabe der New York Times hat mit “One in 8 Million” ein neues Angebot unter dem Motto “New York characters in sound and images” gestartet.

New York is a city of characters. On the subway and in its streets, from the intensity of Midtown to the intimacy of neighborhood blocks, is a 305-square-mile parade of people with something to say. One in 8 Million is a new collection of a few of their passions and problems, relationships and routines, vocations and obsessions. A new story will be added weekly.

Das Wort “character” hat auf Englisch übrigens mehrere Bedeutungen. Zum einen bedeutet es Charakter im Sinne von Wesensart oder auch moralischer Integrität. So kann man z. B. “Charakterschwäche” mit “weakness of character” übersetzen.

Darüber hinaus bezeichnet man mit “character” auch Personen, wenn man zum Ausdruck bringen will, dass es sich um “Originale” bzw. “Typen” handelt. In dieser Bedeutung ist das Wort auch im Falle von “One in 8 Million” zu verstehen.

In diesem Zusammenhang fällt mir auch noch ein schönes Zitat aus dem Film “Pulp Fiction” ein:

Just because you are a character doesn’t mean that you have character

Darüber hinaus kann ein “character” aber auch z. B. eine Roman- oder Filmfigur sein.

Das Wort “may” kann verschiedene Bedeutungen haben. In diesem Fall drückt es aus, dass etwas möglicherweise (vielleicht) der Fall ist.

Heute mal ein Vokabeltipp für alle Kartenspieler verbunden mit einem meiner Lieblingszitate aus einem Film bzw. einer Serie.

Karten an jmd. geben bzw. austeilen heißt auf Englisch “to deal (the) cards to sb”.

Am 8. September 1504 wurde Michelangelos Statue des David feierlich in Florenz enthüllt.

Aus diesem Grund gibt es heute ein sehr schönes Filmzitat aus der US-Serie Lost (Folge: Hearts and Minds), das die Entstehung des Davids zum Thema hat.

Das folgende Zitat stammt aus dem Film Contact mit Jodie Foster. Darin fragt die spätere Wissenschaftlerin Ellie Arroway ihren Vater, ob er glaube, dass es Menschen auf anderen Planeten gäbe. Die Antwort funktioniert im englischen Original viel besser als in der deutschen Übersetzung, da “space” sowohl “Platz” als auch “Weltraum” bedeutet.

“Dad, do you think there’s people on other planets?
“I don’t know, Sparks. But I guess I’d say if it is just us… seems like an awful waste of space.”

Am Ende des Films wiederholt sie dann die Worte ihres Vaters vor einer Gruppe Kindern.

“I’ll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It’s bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it’s just us… seems like an awful waste of space. Right?”
