Die Fußball-WM in Südafrika hat begonnen und so stößt man in internationalen Medien vermehrt auch auf südafrikanische Begriffe. Eine Übersicht findet man u.a. hier im “A-to-Z South African slang guide”. Unter dem Buchstaben “A” wird hier das Wort ayoba genannt, das in den letzten Monaten insbesondere durch die WM-Werbekampagne eines südafrikanischen Mobilfunkanbieters allgemein bekannt geworden ist und das man u.a. mit “cool” oder “toll” übersetzen kann.
It was originally meant as an approval/appreciation of good dancing. But – as with many other slang terms – the exact origins of the phrase are unknown. It is thought to have roots in Johannesburg township culture. It is uniquely South African and expresses delight, excitement, agreement, approval or it can alternatively be used as a greeting or term of goodbye.
