Linktipp: America at Work, America at Leisure
Letzte Woche war mein Linktipp der YouTube-Kanal des British Film Institute, kurz BFI. In dieser Woche geht der Linktipp an eine Playlist mit dem Titel “America at Work, America at Leisure” auf dem offiziellen YouTube-Kanal der “The Library of Congress”.
Work, school, and leisure activities in the United States from 1894 to 1915 are featured in this presentation of 150 motion pictures. Highlights include films of the United States Postal Service from 1903, cattle breeding, fire fighters, ice manufacturing, logging, calisthenic and gymnastic exercises in schools, amusement parks, boxing, expositions, football, parades, swimming, and other sporting events.
Vokabeltipps:
leisure: Freizeit
In der Beschreibung des Films heißt es entsprechend: “The subject is the movement of cut timber from the forest to the mill.”

Great choice, Markus!
Logging is a wonderful subject for an English class.
The men were called lumberjacks, and we call the “Holzfällerhemd” a lumberjack shirt.
What I’m going to do with this film:
Explore the folklore of “tall tales” that were told at logging camps. Typically they involve statements like “It was so cold that…” or “He was so smart that…”.
My personal favorites are those of Paul Bunyan, the giant. Wikipedia has a good overview and links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bunyan. I did a reading exercise for my husband on Paul Bunyan, with an mp3, which he enjoyed working with though I thought he’d be bored, simply because the story is so funny: http://annehodgson.de/2009/08/12/paul-bunyan/

Many of them should work with these great little films of everyday life in America. Lots of exploring to do!
Thanks for this, Markus.
I forgot to mention that song
