Wann verwendet man “much” und wann “many”?

Eine Klassikerfrage, die immer wieder aufkommt. Es gibt die Definitionen, wonach man “much” bei nicht-zählbaren und “many” bei zählbaren Dingen verwendet.
In der Regel geht es jedoch einfacher:
- “much” heißt “viel”
- “many” heißt “viele”
“Ich habe viele Freunde” heißt also “I have many friends”.
Außerdem gibt es dann noch die Möglichkeit, “a lot of” zu sagen. Dies heißt sowohl “viel” als auch “viele”. Es gibt zwar feine Anwendungsunterschiede zwischen much, many und a lot of. Diese kann man aber meiner Meinung nach getrost vernachlässigen. Hauptsache man weiß, dass “much” “viel” und “many” “viele” heißt.

Ich habe mir den Unterschied immer so gemerkt, dass “many” eine Menge angeht, die ich mit Stückzahlen zählen kann; “much” eine Menge, die sich nicht in Stückzahlen (z.B. Flüssigkeit) ausdrücken lässt.

An very interesting topic today. I know it’s easy to get to fussy about grammar, but this really is something that separates the beginners from more fluent learners.
“much” heisst “viel”
Let’s take a look at this sentence:
Mach dir keine Sorgen, wir haben viel Zeit!
This can’t really be translated with much. It sounds extremely formal. This would be better:
Don’t worry, we have plenty of/a lot of/lots of/loads of/bags of time!
This is because “much” is used mostly in questions and negatives with uncountable nouns:
Is there much work to do? No, not much.
The same is true of “many”. It is mainly used in formal written contexts. For example, if you had 10 apples (which are countable) you would not say “I have many apples”, but “I have lots of apples”.
Another good (counter)example is the conversation of the German couple in Casablanca: “Liebchen, what watch? ” “Ähm? Ten watch! ” “Such much?”
